The GfK Consumer Confidence Index for the UK increased to -17 in August 2025, up from -19 in July. This marks the highest level in a year, bolstered by the Bank of England's recent decision to reduce interest rates. Despite this improvement, concerns about persistent inflation, rising unemployment, and possible tax increases continue to weigh on sentiment. Households are feeling more positive about their personal finances, with sentiment increasing by three points for both the past 12 months and the outlook for the next year, reaching -4 and +5, respectively. Although perceptions of the country's economic condition over the past year improved by two points to -42, this remains seven points lower than in August of the previous year. Expectations for the next 12 months fell by one point to -30, which is 15 points lower than a year earlier. Meanwhile, the major purchase index, an indicator of confidence in substantial spending, rose by two points to -13.
