The annual inflation rate in Rwanda climbed for the second month in a row, reaching 6.6% in April 2025, up from 4.9% in March. This represents the highest inflation rate since November 2023, driven primarily by a significant increase in the prices of food and non-alcoholic beverages, which saw their most substantial rise in 16 months (8.2% compared to 3.5% in March). Key contributors to this surge include a 34.7% increase in meat prices and an 8.5% rise in the cost of milk, cheese, and eggs. There was also a noticeable uptick in prices for dining and accommodations (11.9% versus 10.8%) and furniture and household items (5.1% as opposed to 4.8%). In contrast, price growth moderated for housing and utilities (2.6% down from 2.7%) and transportation (3.0% against 11.8%). Month-on-month, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose by 2.3%, marking the steepest increase in 14 months, following a 1.9% rise in March.
