In September 2025, Finland reported a trade deficit of EUR 0.43 billion, contrasting sharply with a surplus of EUR 0.19 billion recorded in the same month the previous year, according to preliminary data. This shift can be attributed to a 3.1% year-on-year decline in exports, reducing to EUR 6.31 billion. The decrease primarily stemmed from diminished shipments to non-EU countries, which plummeted by 14.3%, although exports to EU countries saw a 6.2% increase. Notably, there was a significant downturn in exports to major trading partners, including Germany (-1.5%), the Netherlands (-9.6%), and the United States (-28.8%). On the import side, there was a 6.7% increase, marking an eleven-month peak at EUR 6.74 billion. This surge was driven by heightened purchases from both EU countries (up 4.1%) and non-EU countries (up 10.2%). Imports especially rose from Germany (6.1%), Sweden (16.6%), the United States (5.4%), and Norway (32%). Over the January to September timeframe, Finland recorded a trade deficit of EUR 0.23 billion, a significant reduction from the EUR 2.02 billion deficit in the same period the previous year.
