Lithium carbonate prices experienced a rebound to CNY 73,900 per tonne, recovering from the one-month low of CNY 72,450 recorded on September 15th. This shift occurred as markets evaluated the uncertain outlook for Chinese lithium supply this year. Reports have emerged that operations at CATL's Jiangxi mine are set to resume after being halted in August, though the exact timeline for this return to normalcy remains unclear. These reports have tempered the previous surge in lithium prices that followed CATL’s failure to secure extended mining permits in the region, a key contributor to approximately 3% of global supply. Alongside the anticipated increase from Jiangxi operations, this development mitigated the extent of supply reductions the Chinese government was considering to address deflationary pressures in its latest capacity-cutting initiative. Concurrently, Chinese electric vehicle manufacturers continue to report robust sales volumes, choosing to maintain pricing rather than engage in discounting to vie for market share, thus bolstering demand from battery makers.
